The Company's portfolio of offerings addresses three categories: Datacenter Devices and Solutions (capacity and performance enterprise hard disk drives (HDDs), enterprise solid state drives (SSDs), datacenter software and system solutions); Client Devices (mobile, desktop, gaming and digital video hard drives, client SSDs, embedded products and wafers), and Client Solutions (removable products, hard drive content solutions and flash content solutions). Western Digital (or WD) is a California-based company, one of two (together with Seagate) world leaders in the production of hard drives and solid-state drives (SSDs).

The company was founded in 1970, and initially developed microcontrollers. Switched to HDD production in 1988. Now it also produces NAND memory chips, SSDs, industrial-grade drives, special hard drives for video surveillance systems and consumer storage solutions (NAS). Headquarters and design centers are located in California, production facilities are in Thailand and Malaysia, and official dealerships are located throughout the world. The company employs more than 65,000 people.
